Kate Duke

Kate Duke was born in New York City and grew up there, the oldest of four children. Both of her parents were, and are, great readers, and the children in her family were always well supplied with books. Her parents seemed to enjoy reading to her as much as she loved being read to, and no stories have made such an impression on her as those she was introduced to as a child.
After Kate grew up she signed up for art classes. This turned out to be a good move, for in one of these classes she met the nice fellow who later became her husband Sidney. Most of her books are dedicated to him. At the same time Kate produced the artwork that, many revisions later, became her first book, The Guinea Pig ABC. When the book was accepted for publication, Kate knew that she had found what she wanted to do: to make picture books that children today would love as much as she had loved hers.
