M. W. Penn

Marianne began her career writing software and designing software systems for AT&T, the University of Florida and the FDA. Software documentation and system manuals developed into a career in technical writing and numerous magazine articles in the field of architectural stone.
A love of word and number and a strong belief that children should learn to appreciate both led Marianne to the interdisciplinary idea of presenting math in poetry. Rhyme makes the basic concepts of mathematics more approachable and easier to remember.
In addition to her books, Marianne’s poetry appears in Highlights for Children (see the September, 2009, issue for her latest poem, Miss Molly Mop with the 7s on Top) and numerous anthologies including the International Rotary literacy project, A World of Stories, and the 2008 and 2009 issues of Caduceus from the Yale Press. She presented sessions at the Associated Teachers of Mathematics in Connecticut conference in both 2007 and 2008 and at the 2009 Ten County Math Conference in New York 2009. In October of 2009, she will present three sessions at the annual conference of the Florida state affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and one session at the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference. Through a federal grant, she was artist in residence in West Hartford, CT, in October, 2008.
Marianne is a member of ATOMIC, Associated Teaches of Mathematics New England, Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics, NCTM, SCBWI and the National Women’s Press Club.
