The Amistad was a merchant ship carrying slaves, on its way from slave-trading Cuba to be sold in the United States, when the slaves staged a revolt and took over the ship. When they were found drifting off the coast of Long Island, the boat was brought to Connecticut, where the Africans became tangled in legal battles that went all the way to the Supreme Court. Eventually, the Africans were declared free and some were able to return home.
