Research - How the Pros do it (and you can, too)

GOAL:

To show how carefully chosen research and anecdotal personal experience can work together to enhance student writing and illustration.  

DESCRIPTION: 

Author Kathleen Kudlinski and author/illustrator Sanna Stanley will share the different research processes they have used to bring their books and illustrations alive with both emotion and accuracy. 

Students will do an interactive exercise using easily accessible sources. We will discuss how to use information without plagiarizing or running afoul of copyright laws. We will note especially the laws relating to photographs and art. 

Since neither professional adheres to the methodologies currently in use in class rooms, research teaching plans, we’ll explain how and why our methods differ in ways that may benefit your students.

HANDOUTS:

  • Follow-up Lesson Plans for a range of ages.
  • For review, “5 Core Concept and 5 Core questions” and “The Big Six”
  • An annotated bibliography/webography for further reference by adults and by children.

PRESENTERS:   

Sanna Stanley is the illustrator of AMISTAD, The Story of a Slave Ship, and the writer/illustrator of  MONKEY SUNDAY, a Story from a Congolese Village; MONKEY FOR SALE; and THE RAINS ARE COMING.     Kathleen Kudlinski is the author of numerous award-winning books, including   ROSA PARKS, Young Rebel; EARTHQUAKE! A Story of Old San Francisco, PEARL HARBOR IS BURNING!, A Story of World War II;  DR. SEUSS, Young Author and Artist; and BOY, WERE WE WRONG ABOUT THE SOLAR SYSTEM! among many others. Both authors have years of experience in classrooms and leading writing workshops. 

AUDIENCE:  Teachers, librarians and parents of children gr. 1-12

TIME:  50 minutes to half day (includes writing workshop for participants)
