Writing, Books, & Bullies

GOAL:

To demonstrate how writing and high quality children’s literature can be tools to deal with bullying.

DESCRIPTION:

Two children’s authors will share the different writing processes they have used tobring episodes of bullying to life in their own books. They will demonstrate writing exercises that can help students explore the dynamics of bullying in their lives, and work out solutions. They will also show how a variety of books for different age groups can be used to illuminate the elements of bullying from the point of view of the bully, the victim, and the enablers, as well as provide believable, teachable solutions within the context of engaging stories.

HANDOUTS:

An annotated bibliography of fictional works for different grade levels that address the problem of bullying.

An annotated webography for further reference by adults and by children.

PRESENTERS:

A.C.E. Bauer is the author of critically acclaimed NO CASTLES HERE (’07, 2009 ALA Rainbow List). Kathleen Kudlinski is the author of numerous award‐winning books, including critically acclaimed ROSA PARKS (’03), PEARL HARBOR IS BURNING! (’90), MY LADY POCAHONTAS (’01), and DR. SEUSS (’01) among many others. The authors have years of experience in classrooms and leading writing workshops.

AUDIENCE:

Teachers, librarians and parents of children grades 1‐12

TIME:

50 minutes to half day (includes writing workshop for participants)
