Writing Lively: Bringing the Excitement back to Expository Writing
GOALS:
Aimed at even the most reluctant writer and couched in student-friendly terms this program is chock full of practical tips and techniques that students (and their teachers) can use in their reports, on timed tests, and in any other writing situation.
DESCRIPTION:
Using humor, audience participation, and examples from her professional experience, author Kathleen Kudlinski dramatizes the importance of research and structure in writing reports. She stresses the importance of considering the audience, how and why to construct lively, creative openings (the “hook” in newspaper-speak), spreading a wide net to gathering unique information to flesh out the “body” of a report, concocting a thought-provoking ending (the “kicker”), while maintaining slant, energy, and enthusiasm.
PRESENTER:
Kathleen Kudlinski is the author of 38 children’s books (11 of them nonfiction) and long time writer/illustrator of an award-winning newspaper column on nature. (www.nhregister.com search “Kudlinski) She is an experienced classroom teacher and frequent presenter to schools throughout New England. Kudlinski teaches writing to adults and leads several professional writing groups.
AUDIENCE: grades 3-8
TIME:
Program:1hr
Workshop: 2 1/2 hours for presentation, exploration of school grounds, brainstorming, and produce rough drafts of essays.
COST:
Program: $300 ($1000 for four in one day) milage additional
Workshop: $500, limit 30 students.
Books may be sold to offset the cost of this program and increase its impact on students.
