Poem in Highlights for Children

Alice suggested that I post a link to the poem Miss Molly Mop as it appears in Highlights September issue.

Highlights has been a favourite of mine forever; seeing my own work appear within its fun filled pages is always a thrill.

You know, as I was writing this I realized that I didn’t include the entire name of the piece, just the name of Miss Molly (The poem is actually Miss Molly Mop with the 7s on Top). The titles of the majority of my work for children have included the name of the main character. I now refer to the works only as ‘Sidney’ or ‘Franny’ or, yes, ‘Molly’. I wonder if there might be something more to that. Do you think characters take charge of their stories?

Loved the poem. I have a question, my granddaughter’s goal this year is to have one of her stories published. She is in the 5th grade and wants to submit a story that is of beginning chapter book size. A\She has been writing stories K-1.Can you tell us where to start? Please email me back at kaylyons@yahoo.com

    Hello Kay, thanks for visiting!

I love STONE SOUP, “the magazine by Young Writers & Artists”, for young people ages 8 to 13 – perfect for your grandaughter.

Another one is NEW MOON GIRLS, “an online community and print magazine where girls create and share poetry, artwork, videos, and more”.

Perhaps others will have more ideas. Best of luck to your granddaughter, and tell her that we hope she keeps on reading and writing!

Hi, Kay. Publishing a story is a wonderful goal and we’d all enjoy seeing her reach it. Debbie’s idea of Stone Soup is great.
Another thought might be Highlights’ Foundation.

They run a long list of programs for beginning writers and may just have something interesting for young writers. At the very least, the site offers reprints of past lectures and seminars by many great writers.

I found one more link for you, “Children Writing and Publishing”, which has lots of suggestions.
